Tariff

Flexible Octopus: the default tariff, and when default is right

Flexible Octopus is the standard variable tariff you land on if you pick nothing else. It tracks the Ofgem price cap, has no exit fees, and is the sensible starting point until you know which smart tariff fits your usage.

Best forAnyone switching for the first time, and households without a smart meter or a shiftable load.
You needNothing beyond a standard credit account.
The catch

Default is safe, not optimal. If you have an EV, a heat pump or solar, one of the smart tariffs almost certainly beats it, and you can move between Octopus tariffs without a fee once you have joined.
